Mechanical keyboards are often tall, which can bend your wrists upward while typing. A wrist rest supports the heel of your hand at the keyboard’s height.
How to use one properly
A wrist rest is meant for resting between typing, not for anchoring your wrists while you type. Hovering or resting lightly on the heel of your palm, rather than pressing your wrist into the rest, avoids pressure on the underside of the wrist.
Sizing
Match the length to your keyboard layout:
- Full-size keyboards need a full-length rest.
- TKL keyboards need a shorter one.
- 60–75% layouts need a compact rest.
Match the height, too: the rest should sit at or just below the keyboard’s front edge.
Options
- Glorious keyboard wrist rest: padded rests sized for full-size, TKL and compact layouts.
- HyperX wrist rest: a cooling-gel memory foam rest.
- Logitech G wrist rest: made to pair with Logitech keyboards.
- Wooden rests: firm, easy to clean, and don’t wear out like foam.
Mouse wrist rests
Small mouse wrist rests can help palm-grip users, but they can restrict arm movement in fast games. Many players with low sensitivity prefer no rest at all for the mouse.
Bottom line
Choose a rest that matches your keyboard’s length and height, and use it for resting between typing rather than anchoring your wrists.
