Standard monitor arms are designed for typical 24- to 27-inch monitors. Large ultrawides, 49-inch super-ultrawides and heavy 32-inch monitors can be too heavy or too wide for them, and the arm will sag.

Check three limits

  1. Weight: compare the monitor’s weight without its stand to the arm’s range. Gas-spring arms also have a minimum weight; a light monitor on a heavy-duty arm may not stay down.
  2. Screen size: arms list a maximum screen size.
  3. VESA pattern: most monitors use 75×75 or 100×100. Some large ones use other patterns.

Options

Curved monitors

Curved monitors can be back-heavy and sit far from the mount. Check that the arm supports curved screens, and adjust its tension for the weight.

Desk strength

Heavy arms put a lot of force on the desk edge. Use a sturdy desk, and consider a reinforcement plate under the clamp on thin or particleboard tops.

Bottom line

Match the arm’s weight and size range to your monitor, and protect your desk with a reinforcement plate if needed.
